High throughput SNP chip as cost effective new monitoring tool for assessing invasion dynamics in the comb jelly Mnemiopsis leidyi

چکیده

High throughput low-density SNP arrays provide a cost-effective solution for population genetic studies and monitoring of diversity as well structure commonly implemented in real time stock assessment commercially important fish species. However, the application high invasive species has so far not been implemented. We developed species-specific array comb jelly Mnemiopsis leidyi based on whole genome re-sequencing data. Initially, total 1,395 quality SNPs were identified using stringent filtering criteria. From those, 192 assays designed validated, resulting final panel 116 SNPs. Markers diagnostic between northern southern M. lineages highly polymorphic to distinguish populations. Despite reduced representation genome, our yielded comparable results approach (832,323 SNPs), recovering similar values differentiation samples detecting same clustering groups when performing Structure analyses. The resource presented here provides cost-effective, studies, allowing routinely genotype large number individuals. Monitoring effective size estimations this will allow early detection new introductions from distant source regions or hybridization events. Thereby, chip represents an management tool order understand invasion dynamics opens door implementing such methods wider range non-indigenous

Salinity Gradient of the Baltic Sea Limits the Reproduction and Population Expansion of the Newly Invaded Comb Jelly Mnemiopsis leidyi

The recent invasion of the comb jelly Mnemiopsis leidyi into northern European waters is of major public and scientific concern. One of the key features making M. leidyi a successful invader is its high fecundity combined with fast growth rates. However, little is known about physiological limitations to its reproduction and consequent possible abiotic restrictions to its dispersal. To evaluate...

Mnemiopsis leidyi Invasion and Biodiversity Changes in the Caspian Sea

1.1 Caspian Sea The complex history of the Caspian Sea formation has lead to a variety of different habitats. Like Australia, the Caspian Sea became isolated thousands of years ago (Plate 1). This isolation led to the speciation of many rare animals in particular the sturgeon. The Caspian Sea is the biggest enclosed body of water on Earth, having an even larger area than that of the American Gr...

Invading Mnemiopsis leidyi as a potential threat to Baltic fish

The occurrence of the ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi as a new invasive species in the Baltic Sea and the potential consequences for fish stock recruitment was investigated in spring 2007. The study focused on the Bornholm Basin, which serves as the major spawning ground for cod and sprat, the commercially most important fish stocks in the Baltic. The distribution pattern of M. leidyi revealed a s...

Invasion Pathway of the Ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi in the Mediterranean Sea

Gelatinous zooplankton outbreaks have increased globally owing to a number of human-mediated factors, including food web alterations and species introductions. The invasive ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi entered the Black Sea in the early 1980s. The invasion was followed by the Azov, Caspian, Baltic and North Seas, and, most recently, the Mediterranean Sea. Previous studies identified two distinc...

Reassessing the costs of biological invasion: Mnemiopsis leidyi in the Black sea

Invasions of ecosystems by exotic species have been the focus of a growing body of research in applied biology and ecology, but relatively little attention has been paid to their economic consequences. Even where economic estimates have been made these often make ad hoc assumptions about the biological relationships of interest and lack grounding in economic theory. This paper develops an integ...
